Ukraine Mourns Another Fallen Hero
Border guard Dmytro Volodymyrovych Korbutyak passed away on May 4, 2023, following a severe injury sustained near Bakhmut. Born on June 18, 1983, in Chernivtsi, he attended Secondary School No. 3 before enrolling at the Higher Vocational Art School No. 5, though his studies were cut short by military conscription. This tragedy adds to the heavy toll of the ongoing conflict, highlighting the sacrifices made by Ukrainian defenders.
Korbutyak served as a dog handler in the 31st Chernivtsi Border Guard Detachment named after General-Cornet Oleksandr Pylkevych, remaining there until 2008. After completing his mandatory service, he signed a contract to continue in the border forces. In 2019, he graduated from the International Academy of Personnel Management. On February 25, 2022, as Russia launched its full-scale invasion, he sent his wife and children abroad for safety; the very next day, he returned to his military unit.
Service and Sacrifice of Dmytro Korbutyak
Throughout his military career, Korbutyak fought with the 31st Detachment and later with the 7th Border Guard Detachment, where he also served in a rapid response command post. In April 2023, he was carrying out a combat mission at an observation post codenamed "Ochi" near Bakhmut in Donetsk Oblast. During a barrage from tube artillery and multiple rocket launchers, he suffered a critical wound. Despite undergoing 13 surgeries, he succumbed to his injuries on May 4, 2023. For his courage and dedication to defending Ukraine, he was posthumously awarded the Order for Courage, Third Class.
Korbutyak is survived by his parents, his wife Tetiana, and their two children: daughter Dariia and son Mykola. Tetiana remembers him as someone who "loved cars and machinery" and could "spend hours fixing and tinkering in the garage." She highlights his diligence and drive to provide for his family:
'He always worked hard, took on everything, so that the family would be taken care of.'
Fellow soldiers recall him as "the soul, the brain, and the spirit of the company." Tetiana adds that he "never lost heart and encouraged everyone." Volunteer Ihor Lohvinov notes that Dmytro was "a very bright person" who always sought solutions to any problem.
'He had endless patience, always able to support his family, friends, and brothers-in-arms,'Lohvinov says.
