Princess of the Netherlands Amalia has begun training as a reservist in the armed forces at Defensity College. She is the first female member of the Dutch royal house to enter military service. Amalia has received the lowest ranks in the armed forces: a third-class sailor in the Royal Navy and a third-class soldier in the Royal Army and Royal Air Force.
The part-time study program at the college includes basic military training, but due to a hand injury sustained by Amalia in June, this stage has been postponed. The princess started with theoretical training, which includes weapon knowledge, leadership, map reading, and ensuring safety. Amalia underwent mandatory medical and psychological testing, as well as security checks, just like all new recruits. Regarding the possibility of the princess participating in combat, historian Ben Schunmaker's views are uncertain, as the constitutional reform of 1848 limited the military role of the monarch in the Netherlands.
