Starting January 1, 2027, public transport in Germany may become more expensive. The Deutschlandticket, used by over 14 million people, is expected to cost 66.80 euros per month according to WDR. In comparison, the current subscription costs 63 euros, and its potential increase has already been compared to the price of a ticket in Kyiv. This is reported by Visit Ukraine.
How much will Deutschlandticket cost in 2027
According to WDR calculations, the subscription will increase by 6.1% — to 66.80 euros. At the beginning of August, Deutsche Umwelthilfe predicted a price of 66.40 euros. The difference arose because WDR's calculations took into account the July increase in diesel fuel prices.
The price of the Deutschlandticket has already increased in previous years: in 2025 — from 49 to 58 euros, and in 2026 — to 63 euros per month. Starting in 2027, the amount will for the first time be determined according to a formula agreed upon by the transport ministers of the federal states. It takes into account salary costs, energy, and inflation, as well as the ratio between state subsidies and ticket sales revenue.
Why is the price of tickets changing in Germany
The federal government and states allocate about 3 billion euros per year to support the ticket. This amount has been legally fixed, while transport operators' costs are rising. As a result, part of the additional burden is passed on to passengers.
At the same time, funding for the Deutschlandticket is secured for at least until the end of 2029. The subscription allows for the use of urban and regional transport throughout the country but does not extend to high-speed intercity trains. How local tariffs will change in Berlin and Brandenburg
In the Berlin-Brandenburg region, starting January 1, 2027, the tariffs of the VBB transport association will increase on average by 3.72%. The amount of the increase will depend on the type of ticket:
- a single ticket Berlin AB will remain at 4 euros, while a ticket for four rides will cost 13.20 euros;
- a short trip in Berlin will increase from 2.80 to 2.90 euros;
- a single ticket Berlin ABC will cost 5.20 euros;
- in Potsdam, the AB ticket will increase by 10 cents — to 3.10 euros;
- in Brandenburg an der Havel, Frankfurt (Oder), and Cottbus, the AB tickets will remain at 2.70 euros.
Tickets purchased in advance will not expire: those that need to be validated can be used until June 30, 2027, or returned to the carrier for a refund. Tickets with a specific date will remain valid until the end of the specified period.
The Deutschlandticket is sold as a monthly subscription with automatic renewal. To cancel it for the next month, you must do so by the 10th of the month. For Ukrainians who frequently travel within the city and region, it is advisable to compare the subscription with local tariffs in advance and keep track of changes in ticket prices in Germany.
