Major Andrii Lukaniuk died near Bakhmut: the story of the commander with the call sign Borziy

Every day at 9 a.m., Ukrainians honor the memory of all those whose lives were taken by the Russo-Ukrainian war. Today we remember Andrii Lukaniuk.


On March 6, 2023, in the town of Chasiv Yar in the Bakhmut district of Donetsk region, defender from Bukovyna Major Andrii Lukaniuk was killed. He was born on December 8, 1988, in the village of Hody-Dobrovidka in the Kolomyia district of Ivano-Frankivsk region. He had a talent for painting and a dream of military aviation. Lukaniuk graduated from the College of Electronic Devices of the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas, after which he received an education at the National Academy of Land Forces named after Hetman Petro Sahaidachnyi.


Lukaniuk served in the 80th Air Assault Brigade, where he distinguished himself as a professional. He actively participated in battles for Luhansk airport, Debaltseve, and other settlements. For his bravery and military merits, he received a number of awards, including the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi of the III degree.


In 2021, Lukaniuk graduated from the Master's program at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. In 2022, he became the commander of the airborne battalion of the 80th separate air assault brigade, which he named Legion.


«He was made for the army, for fighting. He spent almost nine years at war almost continuously. He understood what he was doing, managed a large organism, many people. And he cared for these people,» – said his comrade-in-arms Roman Hasko.

Andrii Lukaniuk died on March 6, 2023, in the locality of Chasiv Yar in the Bakhmut district of Donetsk region. He was buried at the Central Cemetery in Chernivtsi. He is remembered by his relatives, friends, and comrades as a military man with a big heart and strong character.


Honoring the Memory

Light memory to all those who fell at the hands of Russian invaders and as a result of the attack by enemy troops on Ukrainian cities and villages.


The army has lost an outstanding defender who added to his glory with several combat awards. Andrii Lukaniuk died, leaving behind a memory of his courage and spirit, inspiring other warriors to feats in the name of freedom and independence of Ukraine.
