Putin Threatens Kyiv Strike During May 9 Parade: Ukraine’s NSC Response

Путін висловлює погрози на адресу столиці України під час урочистостей 9 травня: реакція РНБО на ситуацію.

May 9 Parade Tensions Rise

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the National Security and Defense Council’s Center for Countering Disinformation, stated that Vladimir Putin is anxious about the upcoming May 9 parade in Moscow. The Russian leader announced a ceasefire for May 8–9 but simultaneously threatened a massive missile attack on central Kyiv. According to Kovalenko,

“Putin is deeply worried about his parade, so he decided to activate the propaganda machine and officially, through the Russian Defense Ministry, scare people with strikes on Kyiv.”

International Response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also declared a silence regime starting at midnight on May 5–6, signaling efforts to de-escalate regional tensions. The idea of a brief ceasefire on May 9 was discussed during a phone call between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. It is noted that ending the war depends entirely on Putin’s actions. As Kovalenko remarked,

“Putin can end the war – it all depends only on him. But he constantly avoids it and always lies.”

This situation has alarmed the international community, as Russia’s actions could significantly impact stability in Ukraine and the broader region. In this context, statements from the Russian Defense Ministry continue to escalate tensions, highlighting the strained relations between Ukraine and Russia.

The developments surrounding the May 9 parade and the announced ceasefire underscore the complexity and unpredictability of events between Ukraine and Russia. Statements from both sides suggest possible diplomatic efforts but also indicate a high level of tension. It is crucial for the international community to continue monitoring the situation and supporting peace initiatives to reduce conflict in the region.

The ongoing tensions surrounding the May 9 parade have prompted discussions about external influences on the conflict, particularly regarding Putin's appeals for pressure from Trump on Ukraine. Such dynamics could further complicate the already volatile situation, as both diplomatic and military maneuvers unfold in the region.
