Russia's War in Ukraine
Vladimir Putin has declared that Russia will continue its war against Ukraine until Kyiv agrees to surrender. This statement was part of an ultimatum delivered to the West, in which the Russian president underscored Moscow's intent to achieve its objectives in the conflict. This stance comes as Western support for Ukraine faces political challenges in several key nations.
Territorial Control
At the peak of its offensive in March 2022, Russia controlled 26.16% of Ukrainian territory. However, following the liberation of northern regions, Kharkiv Oblast, and the right bank of Kherson Oblast, this figure decreased to 17.84%. Throughout 2023–2025, Russia controlled between 17.9% and 18.52% of Ukrainian territory, and by the end of 2025, this indicator had risen to 19.32%. Over three years, the Russian army captured only about 1.5% of additional territory, highlighting a largely static frontline for extended periods.
Dmitry Peskov, the presidential press secretary, noted that
"the situation for Kyiv is deteriorating every day". Vladimir Putin emphasized that
"Russia will consistently achieve the goals set before it". These comments signal the Kremlin's intent to continue military operations despite changes on the battlefield and international reactions.
Putin's statement may indicate a new phase of escalation in the conflict, as Russia shows no intention to negotiate and instead issues demands.
