Putin Suggests Meeting with Trump and Xi Jinping Amid Ukraine Conflict
Russian President Vladimir Putin has put forward the idea of a summit this November involving former U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping. The primary goal of this proposed gathering is to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine on terms favorable to Moscow. Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not been invited to participate. This proposal emerged during a phone call between Putin and Trump on October 9.
Details of the Proposed Three-Party Summit
The meeting is tentatively planned to take place alongside the APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for November 18-19. During their conversation, Putin and Trump reportedly agreed that the United States would purchase Russian diesel fuel and assist in marketing it globally. A senior U.S. official revealed that Trump has yet to commit to attending the summit but remains open to the idea.
Additionally, Trump has declined to support new sanctions against Russia, citing ongoing peace talks. He also mentioned engaging in discussions with Russia and China regarding nuclear disarmament. Meanwhile, Zelensky has proposed a separate trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, potentially during the upcoming G20 summit in the United States. In an interview with Bloomberg, Zelensky expressed concerns that U.S. efforts are pressuring Ukraine toward capitulation.
“I’m pursuing peace talks and don’t want to foolishly push Russia away from the negotiating table,” Trump stated.
The Kremlin has confirmed that talks about the potential summit are still underway.
This proposed meeting among Putin, Trump, and Xi signals Russia’s attempt to strengthen its global alliances amid the Ukraine war. Excluding Zelensky suggests Ukraine has little influence over any peace terms being crafted, highlighting the complex diplomatic challenges in the region and their potential impact on Ukraine’s future. Trump’s willingness to engage with Russia could also shape U.S. foreign policy moving forward. For international audiences, this development underscores the shifting dynamics among major powers as they navigate the ongoing conflict.
As discussions about the upcoming summit intensify, it's worth noting that Trump has extended an invitation to Putin for a potential meeting at the G20 summit in Miami. This development highlights the shifting dynamics in international relations, particularly concerning Ukraine, as Zelensky expresses his readiness for direct negotiations.
