Russia and the United States to Hold Negotiations
On January 22 in Moscow, Vladimir Putin will meet with US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to continue dialogue aimed at ending the war against Ukraine. This meeting is significant as a proposed peace plan is reported to be 90% complete. The talks represent a critical diplomatic effort to find a resolution to the ongoing conflict, which has had profound global consequences.
Putin has proposed that the US utilize $1 billion from frozen Russian assets that are subject to American sanctions, which total approximately $5 billion. The majority of the remaining frozen Russian assets, valued between €210 and 230 billion, are located in European countries.
Anticipated Outcomes of the Talks
These negotiations will mark the first official contact between the Trump administration and the Kremlin in 2026. Steve Witkoff confirmed the meeting, stating:
“We are scheduled to meet with him on Thursday” - Steve Witkoff
Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has remained in Ukraine due to the ongoing energy situation, noting that “the situation remains difficult.”
The outcome of these talks could prove decisive for the future course of events in Ukraine and for the potential restoration of relations between Russia and the United States. Given the reported advanced stage of the peace plan, a successful meeting could open new avenues for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. However, the situation in Ukraine remains complex, and the reaction of the Ukrainian government to these negotiations will also be crucial for the future of the region.
