UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting
Ukraine requested an urgent session of the UN Security Council, scheduled for June 8, following a fresh Russian attack on civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced the move, citing a recent bombardment that caused casualties and widespread destruction in the capital and other regions. Russian occupation forces used ballistic missiles and hundreds of attack drones in what Kyiv describes as a severe act of aggression.
Growing International Pressure on Russia
Sybiha stressed that sustained global pressure on Moscow is essential to restoring respect for the UN Charter. He also highlighted that such pressure is key to advancing President Zelenskyy’s substantive proposal for ending the war.
“Continuous international pressure on Russia remains vital to restore respect for the UN Charter and to promote President Zelenskyy’s meaningful offer to the Russian Federation for ending the war,” said Andrii Sybiha.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sent an open letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin proposing a way to conclude the conflict. Putin addressed the letter during his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). He stated that he had reviewed Zelenskyy’s message but added that he has “never refused a meeting with President Zelenskyy, though currently sees no point in it.”
Zelenskyy emphasized that any resolution must be “honest, dignified, and guarantee that the war will not reignite.” Meanwhile, Sybiha thanked Ukraine’s partners for their support and voiced concern over the Kremlin’s reluctance to compromise. Putin, for his part, criticized Zelenskyy for bringing the matter into the public domain. The international community continues to monitor the escalating situation triggered by Kremlin actions.
