Draft Resolution Calling for the Dismissal of Ihor Klymenko

A draft resolution proposing the removal of Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has been published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The motion was initiated by lawmakers Yuliia Yatsyk, Serhii Rudyk, and Mykola Halushko. While the full text of the document has not yet been released, it is set to be reviewed by a parliamentary committee before being put to a vote on the session floor. This development comes in the wake of a terrorist attack in Kyiv, which has intensified scrutiny of the country’s security leadership.

Ihor Klymenko’s Background

Ihor Klymenko was appointed as Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs on February 7, 2023. His educational background includes studies at the Kharkiv Military University and a master’s degree in law from the Dnipro State University of Internal Affairs, specializing in jurisprudence. He began his career in the Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1998, initially serving as a psychologist and later as head of the practical psychology center within the Personnel Department in the Kharkiv region.

Throughout his career, Klymenko served as part of a special peacekeeping operational unit of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kosovo. Starting in 2011, he held roles as deputy head and then head of the personnel inspection department within the MIA’s Personnel Department. In 2015, he took charge of a similar department in the newly established National Police of Ukraine. He later served as deputy head of the National Police under Serhii Kniaziev, and in 2019, he was appointed head of the National Police.

Klymenko was awarded the Order of Merit, third class, by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his contributions to internal affairs. The future of his career now hinges on the parliamentary review of the draft resolution calling for his dismissal.

The potential dismissal of Ihor Klymenko could mark a significant shift in Ukraine’s domestic policy, particularly following the recent terrorist incidents. This move may reflect lawmakers’ desire to reshape leadership within the security forces, which could, in turn, impact the country’s overall security landscape. Monitoring the situation’s progression will be key to understanding the evolving political climate in Ukraine.

As the situation unfolds regarding the proposed dismissal of Interior Minister Klymenko, it is essential to consider the recent developments in the investigation of the police response to the terrorist attack in Kyiv. The Interior Minister has ordered a thorough inquiry into the actions of law enforcement during this critical incident.
