Massive Attack on Kyiv on June 15, 2026
A large-scale missile barrage struck Kyiv on June 15, 2026, causing damage to several key sites, including the National Complex Expocenter of Ukraine (known as VDNG). Specifically, the attack shattered 62 windows in the VDNG greenhouse. Despite these impacts, the complex remains open to visitors.
Constructed between 1952 and 1958 and inaugurated on July 6, 1958, the VDNG spans 287 hectares and contains over 180 structures. Nineteen of these buildings are designated as historical and cultural monuments of Ukraine. After a period of decline from 1991 to 2015, the site underwent a revival starting in June 2015. In recent years, particularly 2025–2026, it hosted the (Un)Fair research project.
Damage from the Shelling
The attacks also impacted the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, where a direct hit sparked a fire on the roof of the Dormition Cathedral. Additional strikes hit residential buildings, including:
- a five-story building in the Pechersk district, which sustained damage;
- a residential building in the Obolon district, with destruction between the third and fourth floors;
- a nine-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district.
The Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio also suffered major losses—a strike caused a fire that destroyed Ukraine’s largest and oldest costume collection. The studio housed approximately 100,000 costumes and three million garments, representing immense cultural value.
Overall, this massive bombardment not only damaged Kyiv’s infrastructure but also endangered vital cultural and historical landmarks.
This incident underscores the ongoing security crisis in Ukraine, where shelling continues to harm both civilian infrastructure and cultural heritage. The destruction of significant cultural assets, such as the film studio’s costume collection, deals a severe blow to Ukrainian culture and history.
