An evolutionary oddity
Land-dwelling hermit crabs Coenobita brevimanus have been identified as a surprising agent of seed dispersal in the rainforests of Okinawa. Botanist Kenji Suetsugu found that these creatures, normally viewed as scavengers, help spread the seeds of the plant Balanophora fungosa by feeding on its fruit and carrying the sticky seeds on their claws and shells.
Balanophora fungosa grows in dark coastal forests on Okinawa, lacks green foliage, and looks mushroom-like. It draws nutrients from the roots of neighboring trees. At the end of flowering, it can produce up to one million tiny fruits. Earlier theories attributed seed movement to wind or ants, but the humid, still air near the forest floor made those ideas hard to accept.
What Kenji Suetsugu discovered
Suetsugu covered shoots with a mesh that allowed only small insects to pass, and the fruits stopped disappearing. Night cameras then caught hermit crabs actively stripping ripe fruit with their claws. Some fruit stuck to the crabs' claws and shells, traveling a few meters from the parent plant; other fruits were swallowed, and the intact embryos were later released as far as one hundred meters away. Mature Balanophora fungosa emits a distinctive yeasty scent that draws the crabs, which is crucial in deep shade where colorful visual cues are scarce.
Kenji Suetsugu said: 'I was delighted by these observations, since these creatures are usually considered scavengers, not allies of flora.'
Biologists have stressed that these small faunal interactions are vital for island ecosystems, opening up new ways of understanding complex natural connections. The findings also underscore how unassuming species can support biodiversity. Learning more about plant-animal relationships may aid conservation strategies for tropical forests threatened by habitat loss and climate change, and such knowledge can inform ecological planning on islands and elsewhere worldwide. These results illustrate how much remains unknown about the hidden connections sustaining tropical ecosystems.
