Unarmed Heroes
Oleksandr Kliuiko operates heavy cranes for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Rivne region. As part of the crane and hoisting unit, he handles the delicate work of lifting multi-ton debris and clearing rubble from collapsed structures. In recent years, his focus has shifted to the aftermath of strikes on residential areas—a job that demands extreme precision and composure.
Some of the most intense moments come during a lull in the fighting, when the silence amplifies every sound.
“The hardest part is working in the silence. You freeze at the controls, trying to hear a voice from under the wreckage. In those moments, there’s no room for error. Every move has to be precise to the millimeter. There have been times when every second counted—the crane clearing the way until we finally heard the most important thing: Alive!”Kliuiko recalls.
Discipline and accuracy are the cornerstones of the job.
“Everything depends on discipline. When you’re working on the edge, you realize: your precision is someone else’s safety,”he stresses. It is thanks to professionals like Oleksandr that lives are saved and aid is delivered in critical situations, making his work both vital and deeply responsible.

In the context of war and emergencies, their professionalism and ability to perform under pressure can mean the difference between life and death.
