The rescue team is heading towards the body of Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier, who died as a result of an accident during an expedition in the Karakoram mountains. According to German media, a Pakistani mountain guide reported this.

Dahlmeier was caught in a rockfall on July 28 in the Karakoram mountains while climbing Laila Peak at an altitude of about 5,700 meters. The search operation became complicated due to the terrain and rockfall.

After surveying the area of the incident by helicopter, it was established that Dahlmeier showed no signs of life; she likely died instantly. The evacuation of the body by helicopter was impossible, and the ground operation of rescuers was considered too risky.

26-year-old discus thrower Vitaliy Rymaruk, who was a champion of Ukraine among youth and a medalist of the senior championships, died on the front line. He served as an officer of the National Guard of Ukraine and died in the Pokrovsk direction in the Donetsk region. Unfortunately, Ukraine has lost another outstanding athlete in the struggle for independence.

In summary: There is always a risk of accidents in mountain expeditions, and the tragic deaths of Laura Dahlmeier and Vitaliy Rymaruk remind us of the dangers that athletes face even outside of competitions. Their loss has been a significant blow to the sports community.
