How the State Emergency Service Uses Robotic Systems
In the Poltava region, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) has been increasingly relying on robotic systems to extinguish fires, particularly in extremely hazardous conditions. Given the modern challenges posed by Russia's tactic of conducting repeated strikes, these technologies have become critical for protecting firefighters' lives. Major General Andriy Khryzhnyak, head of the Poltava regional SES, explained that these robots can approach flames closely and continue operating even after a secondary explosion occurs. This capability significantly reduces risks for personnel during firefighting operations.
“The Poltava administration is a leader in using robotic systems for firefighting. For example, we have a robot that can get very close to the fire and, if a secondary explosion happens, it keeps working.”

Khryzhnyak also recalled an incident where a fuel tank exploded again during firefighting efforts. Despite the blast, the robot continued to suppress the flames, demonstrating the effectiveness and safety of this technology.
The Push for Better Technology
Currently, the Poltava SES primarily relies on foreign-made equipment to combat fires, as domestic robotic systems are mostly designed for demining operations. This highlights the urgent need for continuous technological improvements to ensure the safety of rescue workers in the line of duty. Ukraine's SES has a strong track record of extinguishing fires at oil and gas facilities, typically within a day or just a few hours—unlike in Russia, where similar blazes can burn for five to seven days without being brought under control.
