Flight PS752: International Group Continues to Seek Accountability from Iran for the Shooting Down

The aircraft of flight PS752 of Ukraine International Airlines was shot down on January 8, 2020, near Tehran, Iran. This tragedy claimed the lives of 176 people, including citizens and residents of Ukraine, Canada, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Afghanistan, and Iran. As a result of this disaster, the international community has initiated active measures to hold those responsible for this crime accountable.

In March 2025, the ICAO Council confirmed its jurisdiction to consider the case under the 1944 Chicago Convention, which was an important step in the process of ensuring justice for the victims of the tragedy. In addition, the coordinating group handling the case is engaged in proceedings in the International Court of Justice regarding Iran's violation of the 1971 Montreal Convention. This reflects the seriousness of the international community's intentions to seek accountability from Iran for the shooting down of flight PS752 and to ensure justice for the relatives of the deceased.

Importance of the Case

Thus, the international group continues its work to ensure justice and punish those responsible for this horrific disaster.

This case is significant not only for the relatives of the deceased but also for international aviation safety norms. The involvement of international organizations such as ICAO and the UN underscores the global responsibility for adhering to safety standards and the potential for legal consequences for countries that violate these norms.

  • The successful conclusion of these proceedings could set a precedent for resolving other international incidents related to aviation safety.
