Escalating Threats from Russian Forces
Russian troops are now striking Kyiv with a new type of jet-powered drone, capable of speeds up to 500 km/h—nearly three times faster than earlier models. This speed makes them far harder for Ukrainian defenses to intercept. During the massive bombardment on the night of July 2, Moscow used an unprecedented number of these drones, resulting in heavy casualties and widespread destruction. At least 25 people were killed and 91 wounded in the attack. Approximately 100 buildings were damaged, including residential homes and civilian infrastructure.
Technical Specs of the New Drones
These upgraded drones are equipped with jet engines, boosting their velocity significantly. Their warheads weigh between 50 and 90 kg. After the drone strike, Russian forces also launched cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic Zircon missiles. In the capital, 28 locations were hit. As of the time of this report, 21 fatalities have been confirmed.
Assessing the situation, military experts note that these new Russian drones exceed the capabilities of Ukrainian interceptors, which are limited to 300 km/h. According to Yuriy Ihnat,
“The new Russian drones go beyond the technical limits of Ukrainian interceptor drones.”The enemy is trying to maximize the intensity and density of strikes, compressing the duration of air raids from 10-14 hours down to 4-6 hours, says Bohdan Dolintse.
Ukrainian defense forces are now forced to use expensive interceptor missiles to take down these new UAVs. To counter the threat, Ukraine has deployed a multi-layered air defense system that includes:
- mobile fire groups
- electronic warfare (EW) systems
- helicopters
- anti-drone interceptors
Because of the high-speed targets, the military has to rely on guided surface-to-air missiles. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated,
“Russia will certainly face consequences for the massive combined strike on Kyiv on the night of July 2.”Even a small number of these new drones significantly boosts the effectiveness of Russian attacks, underscoring the serious threat posed by this advanced technology.
This attack highlights an evolution in Russian military tactics, as they adapt their technology to achieve greater efficiency in warfare. The increased speed and power of these new drones challenge Ukraine's air defense systems and demand innovative solutions to protect civilian targets. Facing persistent threats, Ukraine must strengthen its defensive capabilities and raise readiness for future assaults—a shift that could reshape the strategic balance in the region.
In light of these recent advancements, it's crucial to understand the broader context of the ongoing conflict. The latest incident in Kyiv mirrors the intensity of previous assaults, such as the recent overnight attack involving over 50 missiles and 70 drones, which resulted in significant casualties.
