Ceasefire Declared by Russia’s Defense Ministry
On the occasion of the 81st anniversary of Victory in World War II, the Russian Ministry of Defense has announced a ceasefire running from 00:00 on May 8 until May 10, 2025. The decision, made by President Vladimir Putin, calls for a halt to strikes by missile forces and artillery, as well as a stop to the use of long-range precision weapons launched from sea, air, and drones targeting Ukrainian Armed Forces positions and infrastructure. According to the ministry, ‘all Russian military groupings will supposedly completely cease hostilities.’
Moscow has urged Ukraine to follow suit and observe the quiet period. Any violation, the ministry warned, would trigger an ‘adequate response.’ In a notable escalation, the ministry stated that if the celebrations in Moscow were disrupted, Russian forces could launch a massive missile attack on central Kyiv. Civilians in the capital and foreign diplomatic staff were advised to leave the city in a timely manner.
Ukraine’s Response
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded by saying Ukraine would mirror any Russian violations of the ceasefire. He emphasized that he is ‘more worried about his parade in Moscow than about the rest of Russia’ and noted that Ukraine has gained ‘additional opportunities for our long-range sanctions.’ Amid the heightened military tensions, Zelenskyy pointed out that Russia is moving most of its air defense systems to Moscow.
The declared ceasefire appears aimed at showcasing Russia’s control over the conflict, but its effectiveness remains doubtful, especially given that previous similar agreements were not honored. Ukraine’s response signals a readiness to defend its interests and counter potential threats, which could further escalate the war.
As the situation unfolds, the potential for further military actions remains a concern, especially in light of Russia's recent threats targeting key Ukrainian decision-making hubs.
