Russia's Accusations and Warnings
Russia’s foreign intelligence service has accused Ukraine and Latvia of plotting coordinated military strikes on Russian soil. According to Moscow, Kyiv intends to launch combat drones from Baltic territory to target sites inside Russia. The Russian agency claims that Latvian authorities have formally approved these operations and that Ukrainian drone force personnel have already arrived in Latvia.
In response to these unverified allegations, Russia has threatened Riga with retaliatory strikes. The statement warns that the coordinates of decision-making centers in Latvia are known, and that NATO membership will not shield the country from potential consequences.
“The Kyiv regime plans to launch drones from Baltic states to attack Russia,” the Russian intelligence statement reads.
Russia and Belarus Conduct Military Drills
Meanwhile, the Russian Armed Forces have launched nuclear readiness exercises running from May 19 to 21. Participants include:
- Strategic missile forces;
- The Northern and Pacific Fleets;
- Long-range aviation command;
- Elements of the Leningrad and Central Military Districts.
These drills involve over 200 missile launchers, more than 140 aircraft, 73 surface ships, and 13 submarines.
Separately, on May 18, Belarusian forces began field exercises focused on deploying Russian tactical nuclear weapons. These maneuvers, conducted in cooperation with Russian military leadership, aim to test logistical chains and technical readiness for handling special munitions. Belarus’ defense ministry is also assessing the army’s ability to rapidly deploy weapons of mass destruction.
This situation reflects rising tensions in the region, as Russia accuses neighboring countries of military provocation—a pattern that risks further escalation. At the same time, the nuclear drills and heightened military activity in Belarus signal Moscow’s intent to project readiness in response to its own allegations. The developments carry serious implications for European security and NATO-Russia relations.
As tensions rise in Eastern Europe, the situation is further complicated by Russia's recent military exercises. These drills, involving substantial nuclear forces, highlight the Kremlin's focus on readiness amidst accusations against Latvia and Ukraine.
