The Russian occupation administration, together with the 'Rosrybolovstvo', plans a large-scale experiment for catching jellyfish in the Azov Sea in the summer of 2026. Experts warn that such actions may have serious ecological consequences. This is reported by TSN.

Catching Jellyfish in the Azov Sea: What is RF Planning

According to the National Resistance Center, the experimental catching of jellyfish is scheduled to start in July 2026, mainly in resort areas.

The Russian side explains the initiative as 'improving conditions for recreation', however, documents indicate a commercial interest. Significant volumes of catch have already been approved - up to 741 thousand tons.

Part of the jellyfish is planned to be used for the production of gelatin and collagen, while another part is to be disposed of. Since 2025, special fishing tools and barrier nets have been developed and tested for this purpose.

Ecology of the Azov Sea: What Risks Do Experts Mention

Ecologists emphasize that jellyfish play an important role in maintaining the natural balance of the marine ecosystem.

The main threats that may arise:

  • uncontrolled 'blooming' of water

  • decrease in oxygen levels in the water

  • reduction of fish populations

  • disruption of the natural balance of the ecosystem.

'Massive removal of jellyfish may provoke uncontrolled "blooming" of water, a drop in oxygen levels, and further depletion of fish resources', — they note at the National Resistance Center.

The situation is complicated by the fact that an increase in salinity has already been recorded in the Azov Sea. This affects the spawning and life of traditional fish species.

The Ukrainian side considers such actions a gross interference in natural processes for the sake of short-term profit, which may have long-term negative consequences for the entire region.

Recall that an investigation by Reuters revealed that the Russian Federation is implementing significant infrastructure projects in the occupied territories of Ukraine . From 2022 to 2025, over 2500 km of roads and railways have been constructed or upgraded.
