Rheinmetall Resumes Construction of Ukrainian Munitions Facility
The German defense giant Rheinmetall is moving forward with plans to construct a munitions plant in Ukraine, a critical step in bolstering the supply of artillery shells for the nation's armed forces. CEO Armin Papperger confirmed the site has been selected, with the facility slated to become operational in 2026. This new plant will be dedicated to producing 155mm artillery shells.
Initial production capacity is set at 150,000 shells annually. However, Ukrainian officials have expressed interest in potentially doubling that output to 300,000 shells per year. Details of the collaboration were discussed during a meeting between Ukrainian Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal and Armin Papperger at the international DSEI defense exhibition.
Armin Papperger noted that Rheinmetall has already received an order to supply Ukraine with equipment for the ammunition production plant.
He emphasized the company's readiness to begin construction as swiftly as possible. For his part, Denys Shmyhal stated that land for the factory will be allocated in a secure region of Ukraine. This project represents a significant investment in Ukraine's long-term defense industrial base and its capacity to sustain its forces. The ongoing conflict has created a massive demand for artillery ammunition, making domestic production a strategic priority.
