Uncovering the Secrets of the Short-Eared Dog
A groundbreaking study on the short-eared dog (Atelocynus microtis) in Bolivia and Peru has revealed crucial insights into this little-known canid. Researchers compiled 500 records of the species and analyzed 594 independent camera-trap activations. These traps produced 4,635 images, showing that the animal is primarily diurnal—72% of detections occurred during daylight hours, with peak activity between 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.
Habitat and Conservation
The short-eared dog is found exclusively in forested areas and has never been recorded on open beaches or in savannas. Its primary habitat is pristine forest, particularly terra firme—elevated terrain away from rivers. Higher relative abundance was observed in national reserves and at the intersection of Indigenous territories. In unprotected areas, no individuals were detected at all. Before this study, Bolivia had only a handful of confirmed sighting locations and four museum specimens.
To attract the short-eared dog to camera traps, researchers used scent lures, including Chanel No. 5 and Calvin Klein Obsession perfumes. These efforts allowed scientists to gather a wealth of data on this elusive creature. As the study authors note:
'The most important conservation strategy is protecting the Amazon forest canopy through the creation and effective management of protected areas, combined with sustainable Indigenous stewardship.'
