Escalation of Russian Disinformation
Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, has warned that Moscow is intensifying its propaganda campaign. The Kremlin is spreading fabricated stories alleging that Ukraine is deliberately striking civilian populations, a tactic designed to justify Russia's own systematic terror. Kovalenko directly refuted a specific false narrative about children killed in Starobilsk, clarifying that the actual victims were pilots from the 'Rubicon' unit.
Russian Attacks and Their Toll
Kovalenko emphasized that while Russia accuses Ukraine of targeting civilians, it is Moscow that consistently kills innocent people in cities including:
- Kyiv
- Dnipro
- Kharkiv
- Odesa
- Sumy
- Chernihiv
- Kherson
- Nikopol
According to him,
“Russia is lying more and more aggressively that Ukraine 'attacks civilians,' offering no evidence and inventing tales about 'children in Starobilsk.' The more successful our strikes on their military targets, the more frequently these lies appear.”- Andriy Kovalenko.
Kovalenko also noted that Russian attacks are part of a demographic war aimed at killing people and forcing Ukrainians to flee their homes. On the night of June 2, Russia launched a massive combined assault on Ukraine, using attack drones and missiles launched from air, sea, and ground platforms. The strikes hit Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Poltava region, and Chernihiv region. Russia's Defense Ministry claims these bombardments are retaliation for what it calls terrorist acts by the Kyiv regime.
Kovalenko stated:
“Amid their attacks on our civilians, they fabricate stories portraying Ukraine as acting just like Russia. All of this is meant to justify their own terror as a supposed 'response to our actions.'”- Andriy Kovalenko. The situation remains tense, and Ukraine continues to push back against the information war waged by Moscow.
This ongoing battle highlights the critical role of information warfare in the conflict, where disinformation can severely distort how the war is perceived both domestically and internationally. Ukrainian authorities are working to counter these falsehoods swiftly to maintain public trust and ensure the international community receives an accurate picture of events in Ukraine.
As the disinformation campaign escalates, it’s crucial for Ukrainians to stay informed about potential threats, including misleading reports regarding communication disruptions during air raid alerts.
