The Use of FPV Drones in the War

Russian occupation forces have begun deploying FPV drones controlled via fiber-optic cable to attack Kharkiv. These hostile drones have already reached the northern outskirts of the regional capital, raising significant concern among military personnel and specialists. The information about this new threat was published on his Telegram channel by Serhiy Beskrestnov (Flash), an advisor to Ukraine's Minister of Defense and a radio technology expert, who also provided corroborating footage.

Dangers and Challenges

The primary danger of these drones lies in their near-impossibility of detection by traditional radio-electronic intelligence means, as they emit no control radio signals. While radar stations could be useful, they are not an effective solution against a low-flying FPV drone. The expert also considers the option of countering them using acoustic sensors.

The enemy's fiber-optic drone reached the northern outskirts of Kharkiv. These are real threats that we will have to find a technological solution for.

He also highlighted the complexity of laying fiber-optic cable over such a distance in built-up areas, noting: 'It's interesting why they suddenly felt the pull to use optics for Kharkiv. They probably found some corridor on the ground to lay the cable. Unrolling 25 kilometers of line across densely populated land, without it being severed during flight, is no simple task either.' Later, Flash published another video containing Russian threats to attack Kharkiv with such drones.

The use of fiber-optic controlled FPV drones marks a new phase in the evolution of unmanned technology within military conflicts, presenting Ukrainian forces with fresh challenges in air defense. This development underscores the ongoing technological arms race in the region, where battlefield innovations rapidly test existing defensive systems. The importance of adapting to new threats is evident, as traditional detection methods may prove ineffective against such innovative solutions, emphasizing the urgent need for developing new technologies and strategies to ensure regional security.
