Railway Infrastructure Under Attack
Russian forces have conducted drone strikes against railway infrastructure in Ukraine's Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, damaging rolling stock and injuring train crew members. In one attack in Kharkiv Oblast, a drone hit a commuter train, wounding the driver and assistant driver with shrapnel, though passengers were unharmed. A diesel locomotive, which was in use due to a lack of power in the overhead lines, was also damaged. These attacks are part of a broader Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's critical transportation networks, which are vital for both civilian and military logistics.
In the Kryvyi Rih district, a railway station was targeted again in a separate overnight drone strike. A locomotive was damaged in this attack, but the crew had been evacuated beforehand and suffered no casualties.
Massive Assault on Kyiv Region
Separately, on the night of March 14, Russian troops launched a large-scale combined assault on Kyiv Oblast using drones and missiles. Several districts were hit, resulting in civilian deaths, injuries, and damage to residential buildings and infrastructure. The capital city of Kyiv, along with the regions of Kyiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv, were among the areas targeted that night.
These incidents underscore an intensification of hostilities in Ukraine, particularly the use of drones to strike critical infrastructure. Attacks on rail transport can severely disrupt passenger services and supply chains, highlighting the urgent need to protect such vital systems. Such strikes risk escalating the conflict and increasing civilian casualties, a development that causes deep concern both within Ukraine and among the international community.
