Library in Novhorod-Siverskyi Hit by Drone Attack
In the early hours of March 13, Russian forces launched drone strikes across Ukraine, with one attack deliberately targeting the historic municipal library building in Novhorod-Siverskyi, Chernihiv region. The assault was carried out using a 'Geran' (Geranium) type strike drone. The attack ignited a fire on the second floor of the two-story building, damaging approximately 120 square meters. Nearby residential homes and administrative buildings were also damaged in the incident. This attack on a cultural institution is part of a wider pattern of strikes on civilian infrastructure.
Broader Assaults Across Multiple Regions
This strike occurred against a backdrop of other Russian attacks. On March 12, Russian military forces shelled three districts in Dnipropetrovsk region with over 50 artillery and drone strikes, resulting in civilian injuries. That same day, strikes were also recorded against railway infrastructure in the Sumy and Mykolaiv regions, disrupting critical supply lines.
Oleksandr Seliverstov commented on the attack: 'The target was a historical building housing the city library. While the town slept, Russian drones were destroying books and peaceful infrastructure.'
This event underscores the precarious security situation in Ukraine and the persistent threat of external attacks on non-military targets.
The assault on the Novhorod-Siverskyi library and other strikes on civilian objects signal a continued escalation of the conflict. The destruction of cultural and historical landmarks like libraries not only causes physical damage but can have long-term consequences for the nation's heritage. The ongoing attacks on residential areas and civilian infrastructure highlight the urgent need to ensure population safety and protect vital assets from external threats.
