Russia attacked Chernihiv with ballistic missiles: what is known about the consequences

Внаслідок ракетних ударів по Чернігову зазнали руйнувань житлові райони та інфраструктура міста.

Attack on Chernihiv on January 5

On the night of January 5, Russian troops attacked Chernihiv using ballistic weapons and drones. The attack occurred at 2:36 AM, and within half an hour, by 2:50 AM, up to five ballistic missiles were fired at the region. The head of the city military administration, Dmytro Bryzhynskyi, reported that the enemy is attacking a local enterprise in the city with ballistic missiles and UAVs.

Consequences of the attack

As a result of this attack, 10 people were injured, including three children. Unfortunately, an 80-year-old woman lost her life. Residential buildings were damaged: two apartments were completely destroyed, and windows in other apartments and neighboring houses were broken. Additionally, due to the shelling, a significant energy facility in the Chernihiv region experienced a disruption, leaving tens of thousands of subscribers without electricity supply.

Viacheslav Chaus, a representative of the local administration, noted that all services were working at the scene until late at night. Windows in the damaged apartments were covered with OSB boards, and water, electricity, and gas supplies were partially restored. This attack marked another stage in the escalation of the conflict, which harms civilians. Earlier, on December 25, one person died, and another 10 were injured as a result of a drone hitting a high-rise building in Chernihiv.

This attack underscores the growing threat to the civilian population in Ukraine, as such incidents are becoming more frequent. The continuation of the conflict's escalation indicates the need for the international community to pay attention to the situation in the region and take measures to protect civilians. Given previous cases, such aggression could lead to even greater casualties among the civilian population and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
