Civilian Corn Ship Struck by Drone in Black Sea, Crew Members Injured

Товарний судно зазнало удару від дрону в Чорному морі, кілька членів екіпажу постраждали.

Incidents in the Black Sea and Odesa Region

In the early hours of March 5, 2023, a civilian vessel under the Panamanian flag was struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in the Black Sea. The ship, which had departed from the port of Chornomorsk, was carrying a cargo of corn. Crew members sustained injuries in the attack, prompting emergency rescue and evacuation operations.

Separately, on the night of March 4-5, the coastline of the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district in Odesa Oblast also came under attack. A fire broke out at a defunct recreation base, engulfing wooden structures across an area of 250 square meters.

Attacks on Civilian Infrastructure

Simultaneously, drone strikes were recorded in the city of Kharkiv and the town of Kamiana Yaruga. An airstrike, likely carried out by a 'Geran' (Geranium)-type drone, hit Kamiana Yaruga, damaging an outbuilding on private residential property. These attacks are part of a broader pattern targeting civilian areas far from the front lines.

'On the evening of March 4, a UAV hit a civilian vessel under the Panamanian flag in the Black Sea as it was leaving the port of Chornomorsk. The ship was carrying corn. There are injured crew members as a result of the attack,' stated Oleg Kiper.

These events underscore the mounting dangers to civilian shipping in the Black Sea, posing a significant threat to international trade and regional security. The targeting of civilian infrastructure and populated areas, as seen in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district, signals a concerning escalation in the conflict and a rise in violence across Ukraine, drawing increased alarm from the international community.
