Russian Forces Target Ukrainian Energy and Civilian Sites in Overnight Strikes on February 7

Нічні обстріли 7 лютого: атаки російських військ на енергетичну інфраструктуру та цивільні об'єкти України.

Russian Military Strikes on Ukraine's Critical Infrastructure

In the early hours of February 7, Russian military forces launched attacks against critical infrastructure and civilian targets across multiple regions of Ukraine. These assaults are part of a sustained campaign to degrade Ukraine's energy grid and inflict hardship on its population during the winter months. The strikes impacted areas including Volyn, Beryslav, and the Dnipropetrovsk region.

An unspecified critical infrastructure site was hit in Volyn. In Beryslav, the shelling killed one man and wounded three others. In Kherson, Russian forces scored at least five direct hits on the Kherson Thermal Power Plant (CHP), marking the fourth attack on this facility since the beginning of February. Representatives from Naftogaz stated that Russia is continuing its deliberate bombardment of civilian energy infrastructure, aiming to complicate the restoration of heating and power supply systems.

Impact of the Attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk Region

The Dnipropetrovsk region also came under fire. There, the attacks resulted in one fatality and left four people injured. The affected communities were:

  • Vasylkivska
  • Malomykhailivska
  • Slovianska
  • Pokrovska communities of the Synelnykove district

Two of the injured individuals were rescued from under rubble. Emergency services worked at the attack sites to manage the aftermath, though official information on casualties remained pending, as noted by Roman Romanyuk.

These coordinated strikes underscore the ongoing escalation of the conflict, characterized by Russia's systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure. Attacks on energy facilities like thermal power plants are designed to create severe difficulties in restoring power and heat, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. This strategy highlights the critical need to protect essential infrastructure during wartime and the devastating toll these bombardments take on the civilian population.
