Russian Strikes Cripple Ukrainian Power Grid, Plunging Chernihiv into Darkness and Affecting Kyiv and Kharkiv

Атаки російських військ завдали серйозних пошкоджень енергосистемі України, залишивши Чернігів у темряві та вплинувши на Київ і Харків.

Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure Targeted in Major Assault

In a nighttime assault on January 24, 2026, Russian forces launched a coordinated attack against Ukraine's energy infrastructure, causing severe disruptions across multiple regions. The most critical situation unfolded in the Chernihiv region, where a strike on a key power hub in the Nizhyn district resulted in a near-total blackout for the regional capital. According to the utility company Chernihivoblenergo, hundreds of thousands of consumers were left without electricity, with emergency crews and rescue services immediately deployed to the impact site.

Within the city of Chernihiv, the vast majority of districts are experiencing a complete loss of power. The local energy company stated that it is doing everything possible to restore electricity to every household as swiftly as possible. This attack is part of a sustained Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, which has continued for years. Beyond Chernihiv, the assault also severely impacted Kyiv's power system, where a critical capacity deficit was recorded following the mass strike.

Capital and Kharkiv Grapple with Fallout

The consequences of the attack were also felt in the capital: Kyiv's metro system was forced to implement emergency operational changes. Train movement is now limited and operating under dispatcher control on the red and green lines.

Regarding Kharkiv, the attack there also occurred during the night of January 24. Preliminary reports indicate that 15 civilians were injured due to drone strikes, and this number may rise. Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed the information about the attacks and their consequences for residents.

The situation remains complex, with local services continuing to work on mitigating the attack's aftermath to restore power supply and ensure citizen safety.

This assault on Ukraine's energy infrastructure underscores the ongoing conflict and its severe impact on the civilian population.

Restoring electricity and normal life in the affected regions will require significant efforts from the state and local services. Amid the armed conflict, it is crucial to ensure not only energy security but also the protection of civilians who suffer the consequences of such attacks.
