Russian Strikes Target Ukraine's Power Grid, Plunging Five Regions into Darkness

Масштабні удари по енергетичній інфраструктурі України залишили п’ять областей без електрики.

Ukraine's Energy Supply Under Attack

Russian military strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure on April 6th have left consumers in five regions without power as of the morning. Repair crews have begun emergency work to restore electricity. A separate overnight attack on Odesa caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure and resulted in casualties. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's critical infrastructure, which began in the fall of 2022.

The power outages on the morning of April 6th affected the following regions:

  • Chernihiv Oblast
  • Odesa Oblast
  • Kharkiv Oblast
  • Sumy Oblast
  • Kherson Oblast

In Chernihiv Oblast, most districts are without power. In Odesa Oblast, thousands of households remain without electricity after a nighttime strike on a district substation. Localized blackouts have been recorded in Kharkiv, Sumy, and Kherson Oblasts.

Repair teams from Ukrenergo and regional power companies have started damage assessment and restoration. The situation is most severe in Chernihiv Oblast, where damage to several energy facilities has caused the largest number of consumers to lose power. Ukrenergo stated,

"Emergency repair work is underway everywhere the current security situation allows."

Civilian Infrastructure Suffers Heavy Damage

A day of mourning was declared in Odesa following the consequences of the overnight attack. Civilian infrastructure was damaged, including in the city's Prymorskyi district, where a residential high-rise and seven private houses were hit. In the Kyivskyi district, one multi-story building, five private houses, a private kindergarten, a store, and 27 cars were damaged. Overnight, Russian forces launched over 140 attack drones against Ukraine.

Separately, Ukrenergo has recommended that, where possible, consumers should consider weather conditions and shift their use of high-power appliances to the period when solar power plants are most effective—between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

The strikes on Ukraine's energy grid have severe consequences, not only for the power supply but also for the civilian population, which suffers from blackouts and destruction. Repair crews are currently working to restore electricity and mitigate the attacks' effects, which is critically important for maintaining essential services in the affected regions. The situation remains tense, and further developments will depend on the military situation and the overall security conditions in Ukraine.
