Attacks Target Ukrainian Cities
In the early hours of January 24, Russian military forces launched attacks on the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Kyiv. Separately, U.S. military forces reported striking a vessel in the eastern Pacific Ocean, resulting in two fatalities. Intelligence had confirmed the ship, which was operating along known drug trafficking routes, was linked to the narcotics trade. In a related development, the French Navy diverted the sanctioned tanker Grinch to the port of Marseille-Fos for investigation. Suspected of belonging to Russia's 'shadow fleet,' the tanker had departed from the Russian port of Murmansk in early January and was intercepted in the western Mediterranean. The vessel, sailing under the flag of the Comoros Islands, was potentially being used to circumvent sanctions on Russian oil exports.
