Missile Assault on Kyiv on October 22

In the early hours of October 22, Kyiv was struck by a concentrated missile attack launched by Russian forces, involving three separate waves of ballistic missiles. A total of 21 rockets were fired, including those equipped with cluster warheads. One missile struck the Pechersky district, situated between the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and the Svyato-Vvedensky Monastery. The assault caused damage to civilian infrastructure, resulting in two fatalities and 34 injuries, among them five children.

The decision by Russian aggressors to deploy three ballistic missiles armed with cluster warheads led to widespread destruction, affecting:

  • monastic buildings;
  • residential homes;
  • shops;
  • cafes;
  • various other civilian facilities.

Notably, the Vvedensky Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) sustained damage when its roof was perforated by missile fragments, injuring two parishioners. Debris also struck an icon near the monastery entrance.

Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reviewed reports on the emergency response. He emphasized the deliberate nature of this strike:

“This was a highly deliberate attack — purposeful in both weapon choice and target selection — aiming to inflict maximum harm on civilians. There were no military targets nearby, yet the weapon used is designed for large-scale destruction. Russia has not altered its tactics in this war, nor shown any real intent to cease hostilities.”

The cluster warheads employed explode mid-air, dispersing submunitions over an approximate 400-meter radius. The K5 warhead contains 58 individual bomblets, designed to cause extensive damage to personnel and equipment. The Iskander missile equipped with the K5 cluster warhead was used to maximize casualties. The missile strike came shortly after President Zelensky's meeting with a U.S. special envoy, underscoring ongoing hostilities.

Damage and Aftermath

Beyond the tragic loss of life and injuries, the missile barrage damaged homes, medical facilities, infrastructure, a restaurant building, and part of the metro system near the Southern Bridge. Fires and structural collapses were reported, with airstrike impacts confirmed at 32 locations and debris falling at 8 others. These events highlight the urgent need for rapid response to mitigate the consequences of continued military aggression.

This attack underscores the protracted nature of the conflict and Russia's persistent use of internationally banned weapons like cluster munitions, which disproportionately harm civilians. President Zelensky’s remarks on the intentional targeting and weapon selection demonstrate the ongoing aggressive strategy aimed at causing widespread devastation. The assault reinforces the critical importance of international support for Ukraine in confronting this aggression and protecting civilian lives.

In light of this recent attack, it is crucial to understand the ongoing threats faced by the capital. For a detailed account of another incident involving Russian missile strikes on Kyiv, which similarly targeted the Pechersk district with devastating results, you can read more here.
