Strikes on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
Russian military forces have intensified their campaign against Ukraine's critical oil and gas infrastructure, specifically targeting key pumping stations. Recent days have seen several strategic facilities belonging to the state-owned Naftogaz company sustain damage, raising significant concerns about the nation's energy security. These attacks form part of a broader strategy to cripple Ukraine's economy and disrupt its role as an energy transit corridor.
During strikes on two consecutive days in southern Ukraine, a major pumping station was damaged. The company's press service reported that 'Russian forces are using attack drones. As a result of the shelling, one of the pumping stations was damaged. Fortunately, there were no human casualties.' A separate attack also targeted a pumping station of the Druzhba oil pipeline in the city of Brody, where, similarly, no injuries were reported.
Recent Incidents
According to available information, on February 20, the Russian army attacked oil and gas infrastructure in the Poltava region, resulting in a fire. Similar attacks on Naftogaz facilities were recorded on February 9 in the Poltava and Sumy regions, where equipment was damaged or destroyed, though again without causing casualties. Furthermore, in the Poltava region on the night of February 8, Russian forces attacked Naftogaz facilities with drones, leading to the destruction of assets and equipment.
In 2025 alone, Russian troops have carried out 229 attacks on Naftogaz facilities, a number which exceeds the total attacks over the previous three years combined. Sergiy Koretsky, a company official, notes:
'What was the purpose of the Russians' deliberate drone strikes to destroy the Druzhba oil pipeline pumping station in Brody? Sooner or later, we will learn the truth. However, the reason for the deliberate attacks on pumping stations in southern Ukraine is obvious – to prevent alternative supplies of non-Russian oil to Europe.'
