Hundreds of Drones and Two Missiles Target Odesa and Kyiv Regions—Most Intercepted by Ukraine’s Air Defenses

Багато безпілотників та два ракети атакували Одеську та Київську області — більшість було перехоплено українськими ППО.

Details of the September 19 Russian Assault

During the night of September 19, Russian forces launched a significant offensive against Ukrainian territories, firing two Zircon anti-ship missiles from the Kursk region in Russia. This missile strike was accompanied by a swarm of 174 attack drones, including reactive Shahed models, Gerbera drones, loitering munitions like 'Banderol'/'Dan-T,' and decoy drones named 'Parodiya.' The primary targets were the Odesa and Kyiv regions.

Ukraine’s defense forces responded with a coordinated effort involving aviation units, surface-to-air missile troops, electronic warfare teams, unmanned systems, and mobile fire groups. By 8:00 AM on September 19, Ukraine’s air defense had successfully neutralized or suppressed 141 hostile targets—this included 3 loitering munitions "Banderol"/"Dan-T" and 138 enemy drones of various types. Military reports confirmed that enemy air strikes impacted 15 locations, with debris from downed drones falling in 9 others. None of the Russian missiles reached their intended targets; their exact crash sites are still being verified.

Impact of the September 18 Attacks

The previous day’s morning strikes on September 18 inflicted substantial damage on civilian infrastructure across Odesa and Kyiv regions. Notably, an administrative building in Odesa was hit, sparking a fire on its upper floors. The total number of wounded in central Odesa rose to 10 following these attacks. In Kyiv region, drone strikes damaged nine civilian facilities across four districts:

  • Obukhiv (3 sites)
  • Vyshhorod (1 site)
  • Boryspil (2 sites)
  • Bucha (3 sites)

The majority of the damage was to storage warehouses—five of these were hit—as well as a production facility, a garage, vehicles, and a multi-apartment residential building. Air raid alerts sounded almost continuously throughout the assault.

This offensive is part of the ongoing escalation between Russia and Ukraine since the outbreak of war. The deployment of advanced technologies such as drones and precision missiles highlights continuous evolution in military tactics on both sides. Given the scale and intensity of these strikes, maintaining Ukraine’s readiness to counter aerial threats remains crucial, alongside sustained international defense support.
