Russia Launches Large-Scale Offensive Against Ukraine
In the early hours of October 7, Russian forces unleashed a massive assault on Ukraine, deploying 157 attack drones of the Shahed type alongside decoys. The offensive began at 6:00 PM on October 6 and targeted multiple Ukrainian regions, including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Dnipropetrovsk. The attackers used a wide array of weapons, such as anti-ship, ballistic, and cruise missiles.
Attack Breakdown
The strike involved the launch of Zircon and Onyx anti-ship missiles from Russia's Rostov region. Ballistic missiles like the Iskander-M, S-400, and KN-23 were fired from Bryansk and Voronezh regions. Additionally, 48 cruise missiles—including X-101, Iskander-K, and Kalibr—were launched from Vologda, Kursk, and the Caspian Sea. The main assault force comprised 130 strike UAVs, including Shahed and Gerber drones, as well as imitation drones known as 'Parodiya,' deployed from areas such as Orel, Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk, and Hvardiyke in Crimea.
Ukraine’s air defenses, including aviation units, anti-aircraft missile troops, electronic warfare teams, drone operators, and mobile fire groups, actively repelled the attack. By 9:00 AM, Ukrainian air defenses had intercepted or suppressed 161 enemy targets—destroying 5 ballistic missiles, 39 cruise missiles, and 117 drones (38 of which were rocket-propelled). Missile and drone strikes were recorded at 18 separate locations, with debris falling across 5 sites.
The attacks resulted in casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure. In Kyiv, two people were killed and two others rescued from a fire in the Darnytskyi district. In Oleksandriia, Kirovohrad region, one woman died and three were injured, with two individuals unaccounted for. In Pryluky, Chernihiv region, a missile struck a five-story residential building, causing civilian deaths and injuries.
The main targets of the offensive were Kyiv, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Dnipropetrovsk regions, as confirmed by the Ukrainian Air Force. The threat from Russian air attacks persists, leaving the security situation tense.
This assault is part of Russia’s ongoing military campaign against Ukraine, underscoring the continuous threat posed by the aggressor.
As the intensity of these attacks increases, Ukraine is reinforcing its air defense systems to minimize civilian casualties and protect critical infrastructure. The frontlines remain volatile, with future developments likely to significantly influence the trajectory of the conflict.
