Massive Overnight Drone Strike
In a large-scale overnight assault on January 27, Russian forces attacked Ukraine using 165 combat drones. The port city of Odesa bore the brunt of the attack, with over 50 drones targeting the area. The strikes damaged five residential buildings in Odesa and hit an energy facility that had been previously attacked. Dozens of people, including children, are reported wounded.
Strikes Across Multiple Regions
In addition to Odesa, several other Ukrainian regions came under fire, including:
- Lviv
- Dnipropetrovsk
- Mykolaiv
- Sumy
- Kharkiv
One drone struck a house of worship belonging to Evangelical Christians. Rescue operations continue in Odesa as the injured require urgent assistance. This attack is part of Russia's ongoing campaign to target Ukraine's energy grid and civilian areas during the winter months.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy commented on the situation, stating that each such Russian strike undermines ongoing diplomatic efforts and also targets the work of international partners who are trying to help end the war.
The bombardment caused significant damage to civilian infrastructure and the energy system, with serious consequences for the population.
This assault is part of Russia's prolonged military aggression against Ukraine, which began in 2014, and signals a continued escalation of the conflict. President Zelenskyy's remarks underscore the critical need for sustained international support and peace efforts despite relentless military threats. Such attacks not only inflict physical destruction but also place immense psychological pressure on civilians, who require support and aid during this difficult time.
