Ukraine Intercepts 147 of 172 Russian Drones in Overnight Assault

Успішна протиповітряна оборона України знищила більшість російських безпілотників під час нічної атаки.

Strikes Target Odesa, Chernihiv, and Dnipro Regions

In a major overnight assault on April 17, Russian forces launched a wave of drone attacks against the Odesa, Chernihiv, and Dnipro regions. The strikes caused damage to infrastructure and triggered fires. Ukrainian air defense forces successfully intercepted a significant portion of the incoming hostile drones.

The attack on the Odesa region damaged port facilities, transport links, and residential buildings. Fires broke out at several locations, including within the Danube Biosphere Reserve, but were subsequently extinguished by emergency services.

  • Administrative buildings, equipment, and shipping containers were damaged;
  • At least six private homes were destroyed.

Fortunately, there were no reported casualties in the Odesa region, and cleanup operations are ongoing.

Chernihiv and Dnipro Also Hit

Russian drones also struck critical infrastructure in Chernihiv, igniting fires at the attack sites. Separately, a morning strike on Dnipro on April 17 caused a fire and resulted in at least one casualty. These attacks are part of Russia's ongoing campaign to degrade Ukraine's energy and logistical networks.

According to reports, the overnight barrage involved one 'Iskander' ballistic missile and 172 attack drones. By 08:00 on April 17, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or neutralized 147 of the hostile drones, including models such as Shahed, 'Gerbera', and 'Italmas'. The defensive operations took place across the northern, southern, and eastern parts of the country. This occurred on the 1,512th day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The scale of the attack underscores Russia's continued reliance on mass drone strikes to target Ukrainian civilian infrastructure. While Ukraine's air defenses demonstrated high effectiveness in this instance, significantly reducing the number of drones that reached their targets, the situation remains tense. Such assaults pose a persistent threat to civilian safety and the nation's economy.

The recent drone attacks are reminiscent of a previous assault, where Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted a significant number of missiles and drones.
