Ukraine Defends Against 88 Drone Strikes and Ballistic Missile Attack from Russia, Most Targets Intercepted

Russian Assault on Ukraine During the Night of October 28

In the early hours of October 28, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack on Ukraine involving 88 Shahed strike drones, additional drone imitators, and a single ballistic missile. Ukraine’s air defense units successfully intercepted the majority of these airborne threats. The attacks impacted eight different locations, with some areas experiencing no casualties, though injuries were reported in Kharkiv, Pavlohrad, and the Sumy region following assaults on the night of October 27–28.

According to reports, Russia fired an Iskander-M ballistic missile from Taganrog. The drone offensive included 88 Shahed strike UAVs—38 of which were jet-powered—along with S8000 Bandera/Dan-T drones, Gerbera drones, and 'Parodiya' type imitator drones. These attacks originated from multiple directions including Orel, Kursk (Russia), and the temporarily occupied Crimean site of Hvardiiske. Ukraine's integrated air defense system, comprised of aviation units, surface-to-air missile troops, electronic warfare divisions, drone systems, and mobile fire teams, played a crucial role in countering the offensive.

Impact and Damage Assessment

By 8:00 AM on October 28, Ukrainian defenses had neutralized or suppressed 71 enemy Shahed drones, including 31 jet-powered models, as well as other drone types. Enemy airstrikes were confirmed at eight sites, with debris from downed drones falling at two locations. On the evening of October 27, a Russian jet drone struck Kharkiv’s Osnovianskyi district, triggering a large fire. Four people were wounded in the attack, among them a four-year-old child.

Additional strikes hit Pavlohrad in the Dnipropetrovsk region, causing a fire and injuring a 15-year-old boy who was hospitalized. Several garages in a local cooperative were also damaged. Overnight on October 28, Russian forces targeted the Putyvl community in Sumy region, where fires erupted at infrastructure facilities and vehicles. No casualties have been reported in Putyvl so far. Air defense operations continue actively, with several hostile drones still detected in the airspace.

'Enemy air attack impacts were recorded at 8 locations, with debris from downed drones found at 2 locations,' stated the Ukrainian Air Force.

This strike forms part of Russia's ongoing campaign against Ukraine, marked by the use of various drone types and ballistic missile technology. While Ukrainian air defenses have effectively countered much of the threat, injuries among civilians highlight the persistent dangers faced by the population during these escalations. Maintaining robust air defense capabilities remains vital for safeguarding both civilians and critical infrastructure amid the conflict.
