Railway Infrastructure Targeted by Drone Attacks
Russian drones have struck railway infrastructure in Ukraine's Sumy region, damaging facilities in the Shostka and Okhtyrka districts, according to Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction Oleksiy Kubrakov. The attacks resulted in damage to railway equipment, buildings, and tracks, leading to schedule changes for several passenger trains. These strikes are part of a broader pattern of targeting critical civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
Attack Details and Consequences
In Shostka district, a station worker traveling to their shift was caught in the attack and required medical assistance. A 'resilience wagon' used to provide heating for residents was also hit, alongside damage to railway buildings and a locomotive. The area's railway power infrastructure was specifically targeted.
In Okhtyrka district, drones struck a railway station, damaging technical facilities and tracks. Due to these incidents, passenger service in the Sumy region has been temporarily altered:
- Train #896/895 will now run on the Krolevech – Fastiv route instead of Shostka – Fastiv;
- Train #6542 Konotop – Nepliuyeve will not operate on February 5.
Railway workers have since restored train traffic following the attacks.
These strikes on Sumy's railway network highlight the ongoing Russian campaign against key transport hubs, which threatens regional logistics and civilian mobility. The schedule disruptions and equipment damage create significant hardship for residents who depend on rail transport. While the rapid restoration of service demonstrates the railway workers' ability to respond to emergencies, the persistent threat of such attacks continues to jeopardize Ukraine's critical infrastructure.
