Russian Forces Strike Railways Across Three Ukrainian Regions, Damaging Locomotives and Cars

Атака російських військ на залізницю втричі завдала шкоди локомотивам та вагонам.

Attack on Ukraine's Railway Infrastructure

On May 5, 2026, Russian occupation forces targeted railway infrastructure in three regions of Ukraine. The strikes occurred in the morning, causing damage to locomotives and railcars. Thanks to an early warning system, no railway workers or passengers were harmed.

Details of the Strikes

  • In the Kharkiv region, around 07:30, an enemy drone struck a railway depot, completely destroying one railcar.
  • In the Poltava region, a Russian drone landed between the tracks near a diesel locomotive, triggering an explosion and fire. This incident also damaged another railcar.
  • At a station in the Dnipropetrovsk region, an enemy UAV damaged an electric locomotive. However, the train was stopped in advance due to a drone threat warning.

During the night of May 5, Russian forces launched a combined attack on the Poltava region, using both missiles and attack drones. This assault caused significant infrastructure destruction in the Poltava district and resulted in numerous casualties. Additionally, the attack led to a large-scale gas outage.

Even under these conditions, we protect people. The railway is operational. Traffic continues.

These attacks on railway infrastructure are part of a broader Russian military strategy aimed at destabilizing Ukraine and damaging critical assets. Amid the ongoing threat, it is noteworthy that Ukrainian services continue to prioritize safety by employing modern technologies for early threat detection. This underscores the nation's resilience in the face of aggression and its commitment to keeping essential infrastructure running even during wartime.

The recent strikes on Ukraine's railway infrastructure highlight a troubling trend in the ongoing conflict. For further insights into how the Kharkiv region has been specifically affected by similar attacks, including damage to depots and stations, you can read more about the situation here.
