Zaporizhzhia Under Fire: January-February 2026 Attacks

In the opening months of 2026, the city of Zaporizhzhia and its surrounding region endured a series of Russian military strikes. These attacks resulted in civilian casualties, significant property damage, and major disruptions to the power supply, causing deep alarm within the local community. The targeting of civilian areas is a grim feature of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Timeline of the Assaults

  • On January 22, 2026, Russian drones struck a residential neighborhood in the regional capital. The attack damaged at least six private homes and left one person wounded. In a separate, tragic incident during this period, three civilians were killed: a 48-year-old man, a 43-year-old woman, and their 57-year-old neighbor. The strike also ignited a fire that destroyed three vehicles.

  • Four days later, on January 26, further drone attacks hit Zaporizhzhia and its outskirts. In the town of Vilniansk, part of the Zaporizhzhia district, the assault caused a fire and damaged apartment blocks, shattering windows and scarring building facades. That same day, a strike was confirmed on a parking lot near a shopping center in Zaporizhzhia itself.

  • The assaults continued into February. On February 6, another drone attack on Zaporizhzhia injured a 14-year-old boy and damaged homes in a private residential sector. This strike had a particularly severe infrastructural impact, cutting off electricity for approximately 12,000 subscribers across Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

The combined attacks in January and February 2026 inflicted substantial human and material losses on Zaporizhzhia, signaling a dangerous escalation of hostilities in the region.

These events in Zaporizhzhia illustrate the continuation of military aggression with severe consequences for the civilian population. The increasing frequency of attacks resulting in civilian casualties points to an escalation of the conflict and growing security risks in the region.

Amid the ongoing war, it is critical to highlight the humanitarian consequences of such actions and to seek pathways for ensuring safety and support for affected communities. The shelling also presents authorities with immense challenges in restoring critical infrastructure and power supply, underscoring the urgent need for sustained international assistance during such crises.
