Details of the Drone Incidents
According to Moldova’s Ministry of Defense, on September 8, a Shahed drone was identified leaving Moldovan airspace through the Ungheni district after a 17-minute flight. The same drone reentered from Romanian territory and crashed near the village of Starii Mihaileni in the Rîșcani district, igniting a field fire. On September 10, Moldovan officials reported another Russian drone explosion roughly 160 kilometers from Chisinau International Airport.
During an interview with CBS News, President Zelensky addressed these attacks, stating:
“My presidential plane was in Moldova – that’s why they targeted Moldova. When we were returning home through Chisinau, they repeated the attack.”He also expressed suspicion about Russia’s motives, highlighting that the drone strike on the passenger train involved foreign officials: “Perhaps they did not know some Americans were on board, or perhaps they did… I don’t trust them. I believe they knew. Because Europeans, Americans, a large delegation were on that train, that’s why they attacked.”
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre corroborated that the drone created a hazardous situation for Zelensky’s flight from Moldova to Oslo, underscoring the gravity of Russia’s aggressive actions in the region.
