Ukraine’s Security Service Uncovers Russian Psychological Warfare Plans in Occupied Oleshky

Служба безпеки України виявила плани психологічної війни Росії в окупованих Олешках.

Russia’s Psychological Operations Targeting Oleshky in Kherson Region

Russian forces are preparing to launch psychological warfare campaigns in the occupied town of Oleshky, located in Ukraine’s Kherson region. Their plan involves recording staged interviews with local residents who will falsely accuse Ukrainian soldiers of various offenses. These covert operations were uncovered by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) through counterintelligence efforts. The operation is scheduled to begin between October and early November.

One Russian military unit has been ordered to produce videos portraying locals blaming Ukraine’s Defense Forces for ongoing shelling and the city’s blockade. Participants in these videos are expected to undermine Ukraine’s military and political leadership while expressing gratitude towards Russian troops. The SBU urges citizens to distrust enemy and pro-Russian Telegram channels, advising the public to rely solely on verified official sources for information.

“Lacking success on the battlefield, the aggressor is resorting to all possible means to weaken the psychological resilience of Ukrainians and destabilize the country internally,” the SBU stated.

Meanwhile, the Security Service continues to expose enemy schemes and implement comprehensive countermeasures to neutralize them. This highlights ongoing Russian efforts aimed at destabilizing Ukraine through special operations.

Kremlin’s Strategy and the Importance of Information Security

The preparation of these psychological operations by Russian forces reflects the Kremlin’s broader strategy to manipulate public opinion in Ukraine and exacerbate internal tensions. Such tactics are designed not only to discredit Ukraine’s military but also to sow distrust between citizens and their government.

The SBU’s persistent fight against hostile information campaigns underscores the critical role of information security amid the evolving nature of modern conflicts, where information warfare often accompanies physical combat.

In addition to the psychological operations in Oleshky, the SBU has also reported a significant rise in fake websites and social media scams aimed at stealing citizens' data. This surge in disinformation tactics underscores the Kremlin's ongoing efforts to manipulate public perception and destabilize Ukraine. Staying informed through credible sources is crucial in countering these malicious activities.
