Russia Bolsters Defenses in Crimea
Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk stated that Russia is preparing to defend the occupied Crimean peninsula from a possible Ukrainian naval landing. According to him, enemy forces are actively mining beaches and constructing fortifications, effectively turning the Crimean coastline into a defensive line. In response to these actions, Ukraine has been conducting regular drills for amphibious operations.
Pletenchuk noted that Crimea's shorelines are now covered with minefields, and construction of concrete bunkers and engineering obstacles has begun.
“There is an axiom: territory is not considered liberated until a foot soldier steps on it. For the Navy, that means a marine. And we are conducting regular training for amphibious assault operations,” said Dmytro Pletenchuk.
He compared the preparation for a potential landing to the D-Day assault on Omaha Beach in Normandy during World War II:
“Many compare this to the landing on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, because these are extremely difficult operations. Naturally, you have to deal with fortified coastlines... Landing troops there is extraordinarily hard. That is obvious. But we have our own marines,” Pletenchuk added.
