For over a decade of war in Donetsk, Ukraine has lost control over about 70% of the region, which remains a key indicator of success in the conflict. Previously, Donetsk region was one of the most densely populated, industrial, and economic centers of Ukraine with over 4 million residents.

Donetsk is now perceived as a 'gateway' for further Russian threats rather than the main target of the war. Russia, aiming to strengthen its control over the territory, already controls a large part of Donbas and seeks to capture the entire region to have a 'permanent foothold' to pressure other parts of Ukraine.

Commander of the 63rd Brigade Pavel Yurchuk emphasizes that the intensity of fighting in Donetsk is more determined by political motives than by military logic.

The informational and ideological work of the Kremlin makes Donetsk 'historically Russian' through geographical proximity, former economic ties, and the spread of the Russian language.

Defenders Have an Advantage Due to the Terrain

The terrain in Donetsk region, with its network of rivers, hundreds of fortified villages, underground storages, and bunkers, makes large-scale offensives extremely challenging. Information about victories in Donetsk allows the Kremlin to justify its claims and continue pressure on Ukraine.

Commander of the 'Azov' battalion with the call sign 'Grosser' points to the need to concentrate all efforts in Donetsk to accelerate victory, but Ukraine has to keep forces in many directions due to Kremlin pressure.

After over a decade of war in Donetsk, Ukraine has lost control over a significant part of the region's territory, which poses a serious challenge to state sovereignty and security. Russian aggression continues, and the situation in the east of the country remains tense.
