Russia Moves Toward Total Shutdown of Telegram and Messaging Apps

Російська влада готується до повного блокування популярних сервісів обміну повідомленнями.

Moscow Tightens Its Grip on Information Flow

Andriy Yusov, a representative of Ukraine's Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), has reported that Russia is intensifying its blockade of Telegram and other messaging platforms. This move reflects the Kremlin's ambition to establish absolute control over the information space and construct an alternate reality. Russian authorities have also confirmed communication restrictions will be imposed in Moscow during the May 9 Victory Day celebrations.

According to Yusov, the blocking of Telegram has nearly reached its peak, sparking widespread frustration among Russians. Users are complaining about sluggish social media performance and difficulties accessing information. Residents of Moscow, in particular, will lose the ability to send messages during the holiday events.

“I believe this is the model Putin's regime is striving for—total control.” — Andriy Yusov

Yusov emphasized that these actions reveal the endgame for Putin's regime: a tightly controlled environment that fosters the illusion of a parallel reality. In this fabricated world, he noted, “the regime has won, it is stable, strong, and everyone supports it.”

The HUR official attributed these moves to fear: “This is fear. And it's the fear of any KGB-type official—that they might miss something, fail to control something.”

Growing Trends in Information Control

This situation highlights a broader trend of tightening control over Russia's information environment, which carries serious implications for free speech and access to information. The restrictions imposed during major holidays demonstrate the authorities' willingness to aggressively monitor and limit citizen communications, especially amid heightened political tensions. As information becomes a key tool of governance, such measures may significantly shape public consciousness and perceptions of reality within the country.

This escalating crackdown on communication channels is not an isolated incident. It aligns with recent statements from Putin, who has offered justifications for internet blackouts across the nation. Such measures are part of a larger strategy to control narratives and suppress dissent.
