Satellite Images Reveal Russia Building Jet Drone Launch Sites 160 km from Ukraine Border

Супутникові знімки демонструють, як Росія створює нові бази для запуску дронів неподалік кордону з Україною.

Russia Expands Drone Launch Infrastructure

Russia is setting up facilities to launch jet-powered drones in the Oryol region, roughly 160 kilometers from the Ukrainian frontier. Near the abandoned village of Tsymbulova, satellites have detected at least four launch pads, two of which stretch approximately 85 meters in length. Construction on the longer launch structures began in late 2025, while the shorter ones were first spotted in the spring of 2026.

Upgrading Drone Technology

This infrastructure buildup coincides with Russia’s shift to new models in the Geran drone family, ranging from Geran-2 to Geran-5. The Geran-2 is a copy of Iran’s Shahed-136 drone, whereas the Geran-5 features a jet engine and resembles a cruise missile in shape. The base near Tsymbulova is one of two key sites for launching these drones. Moscow has already established similar infrastructure at a destroyed airport in Donetsk.

Analyst Kyle Glen notes: 'the base near Tsymbulova is one of two key launch sites for such drones.'

This information highlights the facility’s strategic importance in the context of military operations. Additionally, Russian forces are using the seized Artek international children’s center in Crimea for propaganda and training. At the occupied camp, they have organized educational courses on drone operation for schoolchildren, reflecting Russia’s active efforts in military preparation.

The development of drone launch infrastructure in the Oryol region signals a strengthening of Russia’s military capabilities near the Ukrainian border. These moves may be part of a broader strategy to build up military presence and enhance strike effectiveness, raising concerns among Ukrainian and international analysts. Involving youth in military training also indicates Russia’s aim to sustain its military operations long-term through education and propaganda aimed at the younger generation.

The recent establishment of drone launch sites near Ukraine's border is not an isolated development. In a related report, Russia is also constructing a new base for 'Shahed' drones approximately 200 kilometers from the Ukrainian frontier. This expansion of drone infrastructure underscores a strategic shift in Russia's military tactics.
