Joint Operation 'Enigma 2.0'
A collaborative effort by Ukrainian and Moldovan security services, codenamed 'Enigma 2.0,' successfully thwarted a series of assassinations orchestrated by Russian intelligence. The intended targets included Ukrainian officials, journalists, and military personnel, notably Andrii Yusov, a representative of Ukraine's Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR). This operation highlights the persistent threat of Russian covert action beyond the front lines of the war.
According to intelligence, Russian agents planned to carry out these killings on Ukrainian and Moldovan soil using hired operatives. An agent network, infiltrating borders under the guise of tourists, was intended to execute the murders. The 'Enigma 2.0' operation enabled Ukraine's SBU counterintelligence, the National Police's Department of Strategic Investigations, and Moldova's National Investigation Inspectorate to disrupt these plans.
Outcomes of the Operation
During the special operation conducted on the territory of both countries, a Russian operative combat group was neutralized. Key enemy targets included:
- Ukrainian journalists and civil activists
- A manager of a strategic enterprise
- Military intelligence (GUR) officers
- Fighters of the GUR's Foreign Legion
As noted by Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko, one specific target was Andrii Yusov, deputy head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.
Andrii Yusov confirmed that his name was among those targeted by the Russian operatives. He stated that such threats are not new and expressed gratitude for the professional and coordinated work of Ukrainian and Moldovan law enforcement and security services, which prevented these and other crimes.
The success of 'Enigma 2.0' underscores the close cooperation between Ukrainian and Moldovan authorities in countering threats emanating from Russian intelligence. Given that the targets were linked to key figures in Ukraine, this operation demonstrates the critical importance of international security coordination, especially during an ongoing armed conflict. The response from the targets themselves emphasizes the constant nature of the threat and the need for continued vigilance.
