According to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the Kremlin is leveraging the controversy surrounding a drone strike in Romania to deflect responsibility for potential future attacks on Moldova. Russia denies any involvement in the incident and instead accuses Ukraine of carrying out the assault. The event unfolded on the night of May 29, during a large-scale Russian bombardment of southern Ukraine, when an unmanned aerial vehicle crossed the border and crashed into the roof of a ten-story building in Galati, Romania—roughly 20 kilometers from the Ukrainian frontier.

Following the strike on Romania, Russia's embassy in Moldova issued a statement alleging that Ukraine was preparing to 'stage' a similar incident. At the same time, Moscow—without providing any evidence—accused Kyiv of attacking NATO territory, prompting a strong response from Romanian authorities. Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador, and the country formally requested that NATO accelerate the delivery of air defense systems.

“Putin has adopted a reckless policy that treats the risk of Russian drones entering the airspace of NATO and Moldova as an acceptable consequence of Russia’s strikes on Ukraine.”

“Putin now appears to regard the risk of civilian casualties in NATO member states as an acceptable outcome of Russia’s ongoing strike campaign.”
According to Bloomberg, Romania has recorded 47 drone incursions into its airspace over the past four years, underscoring the mounting tensions in the region. The attack on Galati has been described as a 'serious and irresponsible escalation' by Moscow, raising alarm among Western nations and intensifying calls for more decisive action to bolster security.
